Tag Archives: authenticity over perfection

There is something about summer that quietly whispers, more.

More adventures.

More memories.

More projects.

More places to go.

More pressure to make every sunset count.

Before we know it, the season that was meant to help us breathe has become another checklist.

This year, I’ve been wondering what it would look like to let summer be different.

Not extraordinary.

Not perfectly planned.

Just deeply noticed.

Because maybe the richest moments aren’t the ones we schedule months in advance. Maybe they’re the ones we almost miss entirely.

The first sip of coffee while the world is still quiet.

Morning light stretching across an old wooden table.

The sound of birds outside an open window.

Fresh flowers gathered from the grocery store because the garden wasn’t blooming.

The pages of a journal slowly filling.

A dog sleeping peacefully at your feet.

A summer rain tapping gently against the windows.

These moments don’t ask us to perform.

They simply ask us to pay attention.

Choosing Authenticity Over Perfection

It’s easy to believe everyone else’s life looks more beautiful than our own.

Our feeds are filled with spotless homes, perfect vacations, curated wardrobes, and flawless summer memories.

Real life isn’t like that.

Sometimes the laundry waits another day.

Sometimes dinner is beautifully simple.

Sometimes you’re healing from things no one else can see.

Sometimes the most productive thing you accomplish is sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee and allowing your heart to rest.

I’ve spent enough years believing life would begin once everything looked the way I imagined.

Now I’m beginning to believe something entirely different.

Life has been happening all along.

Authenticity isn’t settling for less.

It’s refusing to miss your own beautiful life while chasing someone else’s.

Peace Is a Practice

For years I believed peace would arrive once life became easier.

When the finances were settled.

When relationships felt certain.

When the house stayed clean.

When I finally caught up.

But peace doesn’t seem to work that way.

It isn’t something we stumble across after everything falls into place.

It’s something we practice long before it does.

Peace is choosing not to rush.

Peace is praying before reacting.

Peace is putting your phone down.

Peace is opening the windows.

Lighting the candle.

Reading one chapter.

Taking the evening walk.

Folding the laundry with gratitude instead of resentment.

Listening to birds instead of notifications.

The smallest practices often create the most peaceful lives.

Notice the Tiny Things

This summer I’m choosing to notice.

Not because my life is perfect.

Because it’s mine.

The chipped mug I’ve reached for every morning.

Fresh peonies blooming far too briefly.

The laughter shared with my mom during pool mornings.

My daughter’s growing independence.

The old quilt folded over the couch.

The golden hour that somehow arrives every evening whether I stop to admire it or not.

The quiet faithfulness of ordinary days.

None of these moments would ever make headlines.

Yet somehow they’re becoming the story.

A Simple Summer Recipe

Garden Cottage Bowl

There are days when simple really is best.

This has quickly become one of my favorite summer lunches because it’s fresh, nourishing, and takes only a few minutes to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • ½ avocado, sliced
  • ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ½ cucumber, diced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Everything Bagel seasoning
  • Fresh cracked black pepper
  • A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

Layer the cottage cheese into a shallow bowl.

Arrange the avocado, cucumber, and tomatoes around the edge.

Top with fresh basil, Everything Bagel seasoning, cracked pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil.

Take it outside if you can.

Food simply tastes better under a summer sky.

A Gentle Invitation

Maybe this summer doesn’t have to be the most productive one you’ve ever lived.

Maybe it doesn’t have to be the prettiest.

Maybe it doesn’t have to change your entire life.

Maybe it’s enough to become someone who notices.

Someone who slows down.

Someone who chooses peace on purpose.

Someone who finds beauty in ordinary Tuesday afternoons.

Because those ordinary afternoons become extraordinary when we’re fully present.

And perhaps that’s what summer has been trying to teach us all along.

I’d love to hear from you.

What’s one small thing you’ve noticed recently that brought you joy?

Share it in the comments below. I’d love for us to encourage one another.

This Week’s Gentle List

What I’m Reading

The pages of my journal more than any book this week—making room for quiet thoughts and grateful moments.

What I’m Sipping

Fresh coffee in the morning.

Hot tea as the sun begins to set.

What’s Blooming

Peonies have my heart forever, even if I’m admiring them from the grocery store instead of the garden.

What I’m Praying Over

For peaceful hearts.

For wisdom in the waiting.

For the grace to notice God’s goodness in ordinary days.

One Simple Joy

Watching the evening light spill across my little cottage while my dogs nap nearby.

Looking Ahead

A slower rhythm.

More homemade meals.

More porch mornings.

More writing.

More noticing.

Until next time…

Until next time, may you find beauty in the ordinary, peace in the present, and blessings in the birdsong.

With love,

Jenny
